Motivational Monday: What made you realize keto was your lifestyle and not your diet?

When I first started keto, I was trying it to lose weight.  Back then that was my main concern.  I heard about some health conditions it improved/reversed, but I was mainly concerned with dropping weight. I didn’t think I had that many health issues and I wasn’t convinced that just by eating differently, that the issues I had would be solved; that would be way too easy.

Well, I soon realized how good I could feel!  Once I started noticing all of my health issues clearing up, I was HOOKED and I was in it much more for that than the weight loss.

My ‘ah ha’ moment was when I was on a family vacation.  I remember thinking (before I went) I’m going to just eat/drink anything I want... it’s a vacation after all… I can go back on my ‘diet’ when I get home.

So I ate crap food, wheat, sugar, pop, booze… you name it, I ate it or drank it.  The aftermath was swift and painful. I had flaming heart burn, was totally bloated, had a hivey-rash all over my arms, I exhausted and cranky.  I felt like I had arthritis in every joint.  I slept horrible and it was the first time in my life that I thought I might possibly die from a hangover (over exaggeration… but just by a smidge).

Before the vacay was over I cleaned up my act.  I didn’t even track. I just eliminated all grains, sugar, alcohol and unhealthy fats.  Within three days I was pretty much back to my old self. Lesson learned BIG time.  I knew then and there that keto was my lifestyle and not my diet.  Do I have the odd thing with grain/sugar?  Sure.  Do I eat WAY more calories than my body needs while on vacay? Absolutely.  Do I like to get a little tipsy a couple of times a year?  You bet.  But at my core keto is my lifestyle and these little variants are just that, variations of my normal keto life.

I feel way too good on keto to be otherwise.  I’m a lifer.

What made you realize keto was your lifestyle and not your diet?  What was the ‘ah ha’ moment or realization? We’re having this conversation over in my Intentionally Bare Keto Support Group on Facebook. I would love for you to join in!
