Why Protein is so Important?

Why Protein is so Important

For the month of October I want to talk about protein… why it’s so important, how much do we need and how can we get more into our diet.

As you know, there is SO much information out in internet land… how do we know which advice to follow?  It depends on what your health goals are and where you are in your stage of your life.

Protein is important for maintaining muscle mass, which can decline with age and menopause. It also supports overall health, helps with satiety, and can be beneficial for managing weight.

Protein plays a role in maintaining bone density, which can be especially important as we age.  Adequate protein intake is linked to better bone health and can help protect against bone loss.

Here are the 4 main health benefits of protein:

🔹 Bone Structure:

Protein is a major component of bone matrix, the network of proteins and minerals that gives bones their structure. Collagen, a key protein in the bone matrix, provides strength and flexibility to bones.

🔹 Bone Density:

Studies suggest that higher protein intake is associated with greater bone mineral density. Protein can help stimulate the production of bone-forming cells and enhance the effects of calcium on bone health.

🔹 Calcium Absorption:

Protein can influence calcium absorption and balance in the body. Adequate protein helps optimize calcium utilization, which is crucial for maintaining strong bones.

🔹 Muscle Mass:

Since muscle mass supports bone health, maintaining muscle mass through adequate protein intake can indirectly help preserve bone density. Muscle strength and function are closely linked to bone strength, especially as you age.

It’s important to balance protein with other nutrients essential for bone health, such as Vitamin D3 and K2.

As always, if you have specific health concerns or conditions affecting your bones, consulting with a healthcare provider or a dietitian is a good idea. They can provide personalized recommendations based on your individual needs.

❓  Do you feel getting enough protein is important?  Do you feel you get enough? 👇
