Motivational Monday: Take a Dairy Break for Health & Weight Loss

DON’T PANIC!  I am not saying ‘forever’... ok, now that we got that out of the way 😊

Going off of dairy occasionally gives your body a break.  It’s hard to digest and can cause inflammation.  Many people are sensitive to dairy and about 75% of the world is lactose intolerant.  Eating dairy can make losing weight harder for some, and you may have been struggling with some health issues that you didn’t even know was related to eating dairy.  If nothing else, by eliminating this food group temporarily, you have more macro room for some really healthy, nutrient dense foods and you will no doubt lose more weight!

Today starts our 7 Day Macro Tracking Challenge – Grain & Dairy Elimination Week!  December 13 -19 (look in the ‘Featured’ tab in our Intentionally Bare Keto Support Group), so I thought this would be great time to have a discussion about the reasons you may want to consider going dairy free, or eliminating it from your diet from time to time (like a cleanse):

🔷 What researchers say:

There is a lot of research out there that shows a direct link between dairy and inflammation.  Inflammation can be as simple as bloating and weight gain, or it can be ‘inflammatory’ like an autoimmune disease.

Dairy may promote the growth of unhealthy gut bacteria linked to some chronic diseases or conditions including leaky gut.  It can cause immune and inflammatory responses in the body.

Do you have hypothyroidism or hashimoto’s?  If so, eating dairy can cause the immune system to attack the thyroid.  Dairy proteins cause the body to create antibodies, and these antibodies can attack the thyroid.

Do you have psoriasis or eczema?  Dairy can aggravate these conditions.

🔷 Good rule of thumb:

Are you going to go your entire life without eating dairy?  Unless you have an allergy or a sensitivity to it or if a chronic disease has cleared up by being off of it, the odds are good the answer is no.  But by not having dairy everyday you give your body a much needed digestive break.  If you feel really great after being off dairy but are not willing to give it up entirely, think of dairy as a treat you have now and then, or, only have it a couple of times a week.  Doing a ‘dairy free’ cleanse once a month is a great idea too!

🔷 Listen to your body:

A fantastic reason to go off dairy 100% for a week is so you can see how you feel off of them.  Weigh yourself at the start of the week and at the end, and I bet you’ll lose more (all things being equal and you ate your usual macros).  Note your energy, bloating (or lack there of), skin smoothness, bowel movements and sleep.  By going off dairy 100% you can really hone into how your body feels off of it vs cutting back.  If it’s in your system... it’s in your system.
