Interview with Dr. David Harper, Author of BioDiet

I recently interviewed Dr. David Harper, author of the book BioDiet, about the keto lifestyle. It was an interesting conversation. He’s more focused on the benefits of keto for health. Dr. Harper emphasizes the importance of working with your physician to adapt to the keto diet, especially if you’re on medications. Because the ketogenic diet can decrease or even reverse some symptoms of illness, it’s important that your physician be a partner in your health choices, so they can monitor your future need for medications as your body heals itself through diet.

One of Dr. Harper’s primary arguments is that the research that fats are bad for you just isn’t there. The arguments against fat began with a hypothesis by Ansel Keys, but that has never been proven. In fact, saturated fats have no effect on your weight, and some of the fats in dairy can even protect your heart.

Following along these lines, it’s important to note that humans are designed to eat a primarily ketogenic diet. That’s part of why intermittent fasting is so beneficial for some people. We developed from hominids who didn’t consume many carbs. We were literally built for the keto diet. That’s why so many First Nations diets are ketogenic.
