Breaking Down a Big Goal into Bite Sized Pieces

When we have a big goal that we want to achieve, it can seem overwhelming.  For me it’s like thinking of cleaning my entire house from top to bottom… um, I think I’ll just do nothing!  That’s what it can be like when we try to achieve that one big goal all at once.  It becomes too overwhelming (or we stumble) and we just say ‘forget it’.  Big picture thinking is great to visualize the outcome, but how do we actually get there?  Breaking down a big goal into smaller goals can be an effective way to make progress and stay motivated. It can also make a seemingly overwhelming task feel more manageable and achievable. Here are some steps you can follow to break down a big goal into smaller goals.  Get yourself a nice notebook to write all of this in… there is power in pen and paper:

🔹 What’s Your Big Goal?

Identify the big goal you want to achieve. This might be something like running a marathon, starting a business, or losing 80 pounds. It’s important to be specific and have a clear vision of what you want to accomplish.

🔹 Break it Down

Define the smaller goals that will help you achieve the big goal. These smaller goals should be specific and measurable, and should be achievable within a reasonable timeframe. For example, if your big goal is to run a marathon, some smaller goals might include training for a 5K race, increasing your weekly mileage, and completing a long run of a certain distance.

🔹 Realistic Timeline Planning

Create a timeline for each smaller goal. This will help you stay on track and ensure that you are making progress towards your big goal. It’s important to be realistic when creating a timeline and to allow for flexibility in case you encounter any setbacks.  Do not plan your timeline based on perfection, life happens 😊

🔹 Strategy Creates Certainty

Make a plan on how you’re going to achieve each smaller goal. This might include setting specific tasks or actions that you need to take in order to make progress. For example, if one of your smaller goals is to increase your daily walks, your plan might include scheduling a specific amount of time dedicated to your daily walk and gradually increasing the time each week.  Plan it out, I love writing everything in a pretty paper notebook.

🔹 Check in

Monitor your progress and make adjustments as needed. It’s important to regularly check in on your progress and make any necessary adjustments to your plan. This might involve revising your timeline or changing your approach if you encounter any obstacles.

🔹 Celebrate your Wins!

Celebrate your achievements. As you achieve each smaller goal, take a moment to celebrate your progress. This will help keep you motivated and energized as you continue working towards your big goal.  Be positive and speak to yourself like you would to a friend 💗 Be your own best friend.

Breaking down a big goal into smaller goals can be a helpful way to stay focused and make steady progress towards your ultimate objective. By setting specific, measurable goals and creating a plan to achieve them, you can stay on track and stay motivated as you work towards your big goal.

Do you feel overwhelmed thinking about achieving that big goal?  How can you break it down into smaller pieces to make it easier to achieve?
